Publishing Pages On Demand

In addition to publishing a full site or set of pages, on demand publishing provides users the ability to publish a page immediately, allowing them to bypass the workflow process.  Similarly, an item can be archived on demand in the even that a page must be removed immediately from the website.

In order for the user to publish or archive on demand, they must be granted access based on their role and the workflow configuration. See Configuring Workflow Permissions for detail.  In addition to pages, certain types of assets -- files, image and Flash -- can be published on demand as well.

When a page is published on demand, any resources on that page are published along with the page. Pages that link to the newly-published page are not republished as part of this process, so some links to the page may not exist when it is published.

To publish an item on demand:

  1. Click Publishing on the item toolbar.
  2. Click Publish
  3. Percussion updates the status to Approved and publishes the item.

Removing an Item from a Site on Demand

Users with rights to publish on demand will also have the ability to remove an item on demand. When a page is removed on demand, resources used on the page are not removed from the website, as they may be used on other pages. Resources must be removed independently. When an item is archived on demand, links to that item are not updated. Full publish is required to ensure all links to a page are up-to-date.

To remove an item on demand:

  1. Click Publishing on the item toolbar.
  2. Click Remove from Site.
  3. Percussion updates the status to Archived and removes it from the site.

Scheduling the Publishing or Removal of an Item

Users with rights to on demand publishing may schedule an item to be published on a specific date in the future rather than the next time the site is published. Similarly, you may want to schedule a date to remove an item from the site automatically.  The system scheduler checks for scheduled items to publish every 10 minutes. This means that there is a possible 10 minute variance from the selected Publish event time and the time the Publish occurs.  It's been Percussion's experience that this window works for most use cases. If you have a Scheduled publishing use case that requires greater accuracy please let us know.

To schedule an item for publishing or removal:

  1. Click Publishing on the item toolbar.
  2. Click Schedule.
  3. To schedule the publish date for the item:
    1. Click the calendar button next to the Publish field.
    2. Select the date you want to publish the item. You can also enter a time to publish the item. Time is selected in ten-minute increments, as the publisher runs automatically every ten minutes. If you do not schedule a time, the item will be published the first time the publisher runs after midnight of the specified date.
    3. Click Done.
  4. To schedule the removal date for the item:
    1. Click the calendar button next to the Remove field.
    2. Select the date you want to remove the item. You can also enter a time to remove the item. Time is selected in ten-minute increments, as the publisher runs automatically every ten minutes. If you do not schedule a time, the item will be removed the first time the publisher runs after midnight of the specified date.
    3. Click Done.
  5. Click Save.

RSS Feeds and On Demand Publish

As of patch level 5315_1221, RSS Feeds are not included in on demand publishes.  When adding or changing Pages with RSS feeds it is recommend that the Page be Approved, and then an Incremental or Full Publish to be run.
